Why switch to plastic-free washing up?

Most household sponges are made from yellow polyurethane foam, topped with a green polyester ‘scrubby bit’. When you use them, tiny pieces of plastic are shed. These enter the water system via the sewers and spread through the environment. Environmental researchers are finding microplastics in seafood, salt, tapwater, honey and even on remote hillsides.
