Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen
Chemical sunscreens have ingredients (oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate) that may potentially cause health problems. According to some recent researches they seep through the skin into the bloodstream after only a couple hours. These chemicals persist in the blood for up to seven days and exceed, by up to 40 times, the allowed limits. Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, use two natural minerals - zinc oxide and titanium dioxide - as active ingredients. These minerals simply sit on top of your skin and protect it by reflecting away UV rays.
So, mineral sunscreen is the way to go!
And zinc oxide is the best of the two mineral sunscreen active ingredients because it is truly a broad-spectrum blocker. That means it protects you and your family from both UVA and UVB rays. Titanium dioxide does a good job of keeping UVB rays out, but it’s not as effective when it comes to UVA rays. For these and many other reasons Sol De Ibiza have chosen Non Nano Zync Oxide as sunscreen filter.
But what is Non Nano Zync Oxide?
Zinc oxide is a mineral and is the active ingredient of Sol de Ibiza that actually does the work of blocking the sun and protecting your skin from the damaging rays. Zinc oxide sits on top of your skin (rather than soaking in, like chemical sunscreens do) and protects you by scattering, absorbing, and reflecting the sun’s rays.
What about the "Non-Nano" part?
Nano comes from the Greek word “nanos” and means “dwarf”. The term “non-nano” refers to nanometers. One nanometre is one-billionth of a meter, meaning a nanoparticle is a particle smaller than 100 nanometers. Therefore, a non-nano particle is larger than 100 nanometers. Let’s put this into really simple terms: a nanoparticle is super small. Non-nano refers to particles that aren’t so tiny. And, it turns out, non-nano is what you want when it comes to mineral sunscreen. The concern with these super-small nanoparticles is that they might find their way into your body by penetrating your skin and getting into your bloodstream. And while a nanoparticle will pontentially enter your bloodstream, a non-nano particle won’t. For that reason, non-nano is considered safer. Plus, nano-sized particles are so small that they could be ingested by aquatic organisms, and we don’t want that either.
